The previous meeting in Carolina resulted in a 3-2 win for the Leafs, thus the Buds look to get back in the win column tonight in Raleigh. Both clubs have three wins this season, and if the Leafs are to grab victory number four, they will need strong goaltending this evening. After going with "Tosky" against the Sens, it appears as though “The Monster” will get the call, however regardless who appears between the pipes the Leafs will need sniper Phil Kessel to continue to light up opposing netminders. The speedy Kessel has scored five goals in as many games, and look for him to continue his torrid streak. This appears to be a winnable game for the Buds, a club who desperately needs to string together some victories or the playoffs will be a distant memory prior to December.

LEAFS FALL TO SENS

The effort was clearly there, however the results were exactly the same. Despite a strong showing on the road, the Leafs dropped another decision last night, 3-2 at Ottawa. It seems as though the Leafs are really a no luck team, as they again came up short in a close game. Clearly the Leafs are lacking in wins at this point, yet the club has not been blown out during this losing skid per say, however losing games by one goal in regulation, in overtime, or in a shootout results in the same outcome at the end of the day. The Buds look to end the skid tomorrow night at Carolina, a rink that has been somewhat kind to the club over the past few seasons. Look for the Maple Leafs to come out like a team that has there backs against the wall tomorrow night in Raleigh.

LEAFS TRAVEL TO OTTAWA

The Maple Leafs look to break out of yet another funk tonight at Ottawa. The battle of Ontario is always exciting to say the least, so look for a tough game this evening. This is the type of game that could turn around the season, as key wins in divisional games are crucial to any team who wishes to participate in the post season, let alone a club that has struggled early on. Vesa “Tosky” Toskala, will get the start, and the goaltender will attempt to earn a victory after playing much better in his start on Friday and in his relief appearance versus Calgary. If the Buds can grab a victory on the road in Bytown, than perhaps the club could parlay that momentum into victories over the upcoming days.

LEAFS FINISH UP ROAD SWING VS CANADIANS

LEAFS HOPE FOR BETTER LUCK VS HABS
The Leafs could use a little help from Lady Luck. The Leafs have lost two straight in overtime and look to build upon their improved play as of late when facing the
Canadians tonight at the Bell Centre. Last night the Leafs were at the mercy of a questionable officiating decision to say the least, and despite tying the game with a short handed goal and sending it into O.T. the Buds gave up a power play marker to drop their second straight. Perhaps tonight the Leafs will be on the right side of fortune and get some bounces, so that they can return home on a winning note.

LEAFS GO FOR WIN # 2

LEAFS LOOK TO MAKE IT TWO STRAIGHT IN BIG D
It starts with one. After recording their first win of the season on Monday, the Leafs travel to the Lone Star State tonight to face off against Dallas. The Buds are clicking on offense, scoring six goals against the Ducks, five of which came on the power play. The potent offence, combined with solid goaltending proved to be a solid combination for the Leafs, however it will take a similar effort tonight if the Buds are to make it two wins in a row. Dallas has a strong goaltender in Marty Turco, and it will be the battle between the pipes that will ultimately tell the tale in tonight’s contest. The Buds current scoring leader is none other than Tomas Kaberle, who has recorded ten points thus far. Look for the slick defenceman to continue his offensive production, while making a legitimate case for the vacant captaincy. This will be the only meeting between these two clubs this season, and hopefully the Leafs can improve on last years 8-2 drubbing by the Stars last season.

LEAFS WIN

LEAFS GRAB A WIN IN ANAHEIM
The 8oo pound gorilla has officially been removed from the back of Leafs nation. The Leafs snapped an eight game winless streak last night, exploding to a 6-3 demolition of the Anaheim Ducks. From the net out, the Leafs were drastically improved last night, getting solid goaltending from Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson, who stopped 25 shots en route to his first regular season National Hockey League win. This was the big Swede’s first game back after sitting for over a week with a groin injury. The Maple Leafs defence corps made life easier for their netminder by only allowing 28 shots, and if the opposition is held to under 30 shots it looks as if the Buds will be able to compete on a nightly basis. Perhaps the biggest pleasant surprise for the Leafs was the five power play goals scored last night, three of which came off of the stick of Niklas Hagman. This power play hat trick boosted the Leafs confidence which in turn helped the club get off the losing streak that was hanging over the heads of every member of Leafs nation. Defenceman Tomas Kaberle recorded a goal and added four assists on the power play, showing coaches, management, teammates, and fans that he truly does deserve to be named captain of the squad. The veteran defenceman has now recorded ten points on the year, which makes him the Leaf scoring leader at this point of the season. This game was a homecoming of sorts for General Manager Brian Burke, who was in charge of the Ducks team that won the 2007 Stanley Cup. Next up for the Leafs is a visit to the Lone Star state to take on the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night. Now that the losing streak is ancient history the Leafs can take the momentum created last night and begin winning games and challenging for the playoffs.

LEAFS-DUCKS

LEAFS SEEK FIRST WIN AT ANAHEIM
After eight games the Leafs are still searching for win number one this season. Tonight the 0-7-1 Buds travel to Anaheim to face the 3-5-1 Ducks. The trip to Anaheim will be a homecoming of sorts for General Manager Brian Burke and defenceman Francois Beauchemin, both of whom count the Ducks as former employers. The Leafs will try to carry the strong effort that was showed on Saturday night versus Vancouver into tonight’s game. The Leafs were pressing the Canucks hard in the waning moments of Saturday’s contest, only to surrender an empty net goal. To add further intrigue to tonight’s game, Justin Pogge may get the start in goal for the Ducks, and no doubt he will look to get a measure of revenge on the team who drafted and traded him. This Monday night affair will be a chance for the Leafs to get their first win of the season, and remove the weight of the world that they are currently carrying on their backs.

5 GAME ROAD TRIP

LEAFS PRACTICE HARD IN LIEU OF ROAD TRIP
A rare seven day break between games allowed the Leafs to practice hard and do some bonding exercises prior to the five game road trip. The Leafs travel to Vancouver to face the Canucks tomorrow night, as the club will attempt to record their first win of the season. It appears as though goaltender Joey MacDonald will get the start versus the Canucks, however rumors abound that both Jonas Gustavsson and Vesa Toskala could be healthy before the Buds return home. Coach Ron Wilson mixed up hard practices with a team bonding mini-shiny tournament this week, an exercise that clearly was meant to loosen the tense atmosphere that surrounds the winless club. It appears as though defenceman Luke Schenn is currently in the doghouse, thus expect to see his ice time reduced for tomorrows game. If the Leafs are to break out of their funk tomorrow night it will take spectacular goaltending from MacDonald, solid support from the defence corps, and goals coming from anyone who is willing. Despite the winless record thus far, the seven day rest period has given the Leafs the chance to re-charge their batteries and break the losing cycle.

LEAFS SET TO START 5 GAME ROAD SWING

LEAFS USE TIME TO PREPARE FOR CANUCKS
The Toronto Maple Leafs are working out the kinks in preparation for the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night. Injured goaltender Jonas Gustavsson, practiced yesterday, however it does not look like he will go on Saturday. This means another start for Joey MacDonald, who gets the chance to record the first win of season for the club. Seven days between games is certainly rare, however the break means that the Leafs can make adjustments to a lineup that has not yet lived up to the pre-season billing. The Vancouver game is the first of five consecutive road games for the Buds, who do not return home until November 3rd. The west coast has never been friendly to the Leafs, however some time away from the pressure cooker of Toronto can provide an environment wherein the Leafs can bond and come together as a unit. Whatever the case may be, this five game road trip will indicate if the Leafs can become a team that will begin to put some wins together, or remain stuck in futility.

UNDERGOG LEAFS SEEK REVENGE VS RANGERS

LEAFS FO FOR WIN # 1
The current state of Leaf nation is a place where patience is thinner than a Mary-Kate and Ashley Wilson breakfast buffet. The Maple Leafs, winless on the year, will take on the red-hot New York Rangers tonight at the ACC. This will be the second meeting in less than a week between the two clubs, with the Rangers dominating the Leafs on Thanksgiving by a 7-2 score. The underdog Leafs will get the chance to avenge Monday’s debacle, and if the Buds are going to pull off the upset it will take a super human effort from goaltender Joey MacDonald, who will be the number one man for the foreseeable future. The Rangers have won every game they have played so far this season, with the exception of an opening night loss to Syd the Kid and the cup champs. The Leafs on the other hand are winless, and the only point procured thus far was an opening night OT loss to the Canadiens. It would appear as though this could be a mismatch, however stranger things have happened, yet a full team effort, combined with MacDonald standing on his head are the recipes for the Leafs hanging in this game. What better way to get win number one than versus a top club, who comes into the Bay Street Barn as a heavy favourite. To say that pressure is high would be an understatement, however look for the Buds to play hard in the quest for win number one tonight.

LEAFS FALL TO 0-5-1 AFTER LOSS TO AVALANCHE

Even a new goaltender could not save the Leafs last night. The Leafs dropped a 4-1 decision to the much improved Avalanche at the ACC. Joey MacDonald was given the start last night; however the goaltending change did little to change the fortunes of the winless Maple Leafs. MacDonald stopped 24 out of 28 shots in his first regular season start for the Buds. Former Leaf Darcy Tucker led the way for the visitors, tallying a goal and an assist against his ex-mates. Coach Ron Wilson made a number of changes to the Leaf lineup, namely changing goaltenders, and benching Matt Stajan and Niklas Hagman. It is strange to say the least that Wilson would sit his most consistent scorer Stajan, especially considering the fact that goals are hard to come by right now for the Leafs. The only bright spot for the Leafs was that Francois Beauchemin scored a power play goal, assisted by fellow defender Tomas Kaberle and the call up Tyler Bozak. The Leafs have been given a day off today to charge their batteries, before resuming practice tomorrow in preparation for a rematch with the Rangers at the ACC on Saturday night.

LEAFS PLAY LIKE TURKEYS

LEAFS GIVE UP A CONVERTED TOUCHDOWN IN LOSS TO RANGERS
Perhaps we can blame the thanksgiving bird. The Leafs came out flat last night dropping a 7-2 decision to the Broadway blue shirts. Once again, goaltending was a problem for the Leafs, as netminder Veska Toskala gave up seven goals on 33 shots. The defence corps did not do the goaltender many favors, however a number of goals appeared to be preventable, and better goaltending is obligatory if the Leafs are to get off of this negative slide. Coach Wilson has stated that he is unsure of who will be in net for the Buds tonight, saying he would decide on the plane ride home. It appears as though third stringer Joey MacDonald should get the opportunity to deep the Avalanche off of the score sheet tonight. The Leafs have played some tough clubs over the past few games, losing to the defending champion Pittsburgh club on Saturday, while dropping one last night to a Rangers team that has now recorded five consecutive victories. One highlight for the Buds was the first period heavyweight tilt between Colton Orr and Donald Brashear, however this did little to get the Leafs fired up. The Leafs could certainly use a healthy dose of “Lady Luck” tonight, something that has been missing thus far in 2009-10. All is not lost for the Buds and a win tonight will right the ship and put the club back on the playoff road. Let’s hope that the turkey consumed over the weekend is now fully digested.

LEAFS FALL TO CHAMPS

LEAFS REMAIN WINLESS AFTER PENS DEBACLE
The Leafs were outplayed by the defending Stanley Cup champions in every phase of the game. The Buds dropped their record to 0-4 after falling to a clearly superior Penguins club 5-2 last night at the ACC. The penalty killing unit is in need of drastic improvement to say the least, once again surrendering multiple goals, which in turn contributed to the loss. The Pens are indeed deadly on the power play, scoring three times with the man advantage. It appears as though the rough and rugged style of the Leafs will put the club in perilous positions unless the penalty killing unit cleans up their act. After a groin injury put “The Monster” on the shelf for 7-10 days, Vesa Toskala got the nod, but was clearly in awe of the prolific offensive team that opposed him. Toskala surrendered five goals on 33 shots, however he failed to stop the deadly Pens shooters when called upon, which in turn prompted coach Wilson to remark “occasionally you need a save”, not exactly a ringing endorsement from your head coach. On the opposite end of the rink, Pittsburgh goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 18 of 20 shots, which clearly indicates that Leaf forwards must concentrate on generating more shots on opposing netminders if the club is to improve its offensive production. On a positive note for the Leafs, forward Jay Rosehill scored on a tip in, displaying how a little bit of traffic in front of opposition goalies can benefit the Leafs cause. The Leafs defence corps had difficulties slowing down the vaunted Penguin attack, as the champs gave the Leafs fits for 60 minutes. Once again Francois Beauchemin and Tomas Kaberle led the Buds in ice time logged, with Mike Komisarek and Luke Schenn also contributing significant minutes, Schenn even adding an assist on the second Leaf goal. The Pens were clearly the better team last night, and if the Leafs are to be competitive against the league’s elite teams, that a better all around team effort is needed. The Leafs have Sunday off before travelling to New York for a Thanksgiving Monday tilt with the Rangers followed by a visit from the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night at the ACC.

LEAFS GO FOR FIIRST WIN OF THE YEAR VS CHAMPS

LEAFS SEARCH FOR WIN #1 VS PENS
The Maple Leafs seek their first win of the season against the defending champions Saturday night at the ACC. Despite starting out 0-3, the Leafs showed a number of positive signs against Ottawa, and if the Buds are to beat Pittsburgh than building off of those positive aspects is a must. Goaltender Jonas Gustavsson looked sharp in his first regular season start, with the exception of the two goals given up in a 37 second span during the second period. The first goal was a border line high stick, while the second goal came from an ambivalent penalty shot call that was buried by Sens captain Daniel Alfredsson. If “The Monster” plays the way he did for the vast majority of the game against Ottawa, than he should give the Leafs a fighting chance against Pittsburgh’s potent forwards. On defence, the Leafs helped out their goaltender by limiting traffic in front of the net for the most part. Staying out of the box was also a positive factor, as the first two games indicated that the Leafs are susceptible to giving up power play goals. Francois Beauchemin looked every part like the seasoned pro that he is, logging major ice time, while contributing strong defensive play mixed with dangerous rushes into the opponent’s zone. Clearly the Leafs need more scoring up front, as someone other than Matt Stajan must threaten opposing goalies if the Leafs are to get the red light going on a consistent basis. The Leaf power play has been somewhat of a pleasant surprise, with Stajan scoring three goals in as many games. Instead of going into panic mode, the Leafs should attempt to build off of the positive signs that the club showed against Ottawa while preparing for Saturday night’s tilt against the champs. Nobody is expecting the Pens to roll over and die, however if the Leafs get solid goaltending, stay out of the box, and get production from the defence and forward ranks than it should be a barn burner down at the ACC on Saturday night.

LEAFS DROP A TIGHT ONE

LEAFS COME UP SHORT VERSUS SENS
One thing is for certain, the Maple Leafs will engage in some defensive battles this season. In a tense puck-control game, the Leafs fell to Ottawa by a score of 2-1, dropping their record to 0-3 this season. The Leafs played strong defensive hockey in the first period, keeping the Senators off of the score sheet. The Senators broke open the tight scoring affair during the second period when Shean Donovan put the visitors on the board. The Sens doubled the lead 37 seconds later when Daniel Alfredson scored on what some would say was a controversial penalty shot. The Leafs started rookie Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson in goal, who preformed admirably except for the two goals scored in quick succession. On a positive note for the Leafs, Matt Stajan scored his third goal in three games, all of which came have come on the power play. The defence corps got into the offensive zone for the Leafs on the goal, as assists came from blue liners Tomas Kaberle and Francois Beauchemin. This was a well worked goal, as the Maple Leaf power play unit showed it can move the puck with nifty touches in the offensive zone. The quest for the first victory of the season does not get any easier for the Leafs, as next up are the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins, who will travel to the ACC on Saturday night. If the Leafs come up with the same defensive intensity and discipline that they showed tonight than they will challenge the champs right down to the final shift.

LEAFS FACE QUESTION MARK IN GOAL

WHO’S IN NET?
As the Leafs prepare for the battle of Ontario one key question remains, who will start in goal tonight versus Ottawa? Vesa Toskala has been shaky at best through the first two games, giving up a number of soft goals and being pulled against Washington on Saturday night. Perhaps it is time that coach Ron Wilson turns to the rookie Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson, who relieved Toskala against the Caps, yet did little to keep Washington’s snipers off of the scoreboard. It appears as though the coach might have to look at the Swedish rookie tonight, as the club is desperate to get into the win column, and wins within the division are always of vital importance. Who ever starts in goal will need more support from the Leafs defence corps, not to mention better defensive efforts from back-checking forwards. The Leafs are a vastly different team, built in the image of General Manager Brian Burke, who relishes toughness and physical play. That being said, the Leafs must stay out of the penalty box, especially defensive leaders such as Mike Komisarek, who spent key minutes in the sin-bin against Montreal, which in turn resulted in the Habs scoring the tying goal in the dying minutes of regulation. If the Leafs do manage to stay out of the box it will certainly make the life of whomever appears between the pipes much easier. After giving the incumbent Toskala two consecutive starts without a win, Wilson should look at the Swedish rook to boost the club tonight. Whoever starts in goal tonight will have to shut down the Sens if the Leafs are to win their first game of the season, and if the Leafs do indeed grab the victory, it appears as though the goalkeeper who leads them to victory will remain the number one guy for the foreseeable future.

LEAFS IN SEARCH OF 1ST W

LEAFS SEEK FIRST WIN VERSUS SENATORS
After commencing the season at 0-2, the Toronto Maple Leafs look to grab their first win of the season tomorrow night at the ACC against the visiting Ottawa Senators. If the Leafs are to get out of there mini-funk, they will need to be much better defensively than they have been through the first two games. Goaltender Vesa Toskala must make big saves at key moments, something that has yet to happen this year. The Leafs brought in Jonas Gustavsson Saturday night against Washington; however he did little to prevent the constant attacking barrage that the offensively laden Caps threw at him. Whoever lines up in the crease will need much more support from the Leafs defence corps, who have looked shaky to say the least through the first two games. The battle of Ontario is always interesting and this should be a tough, passion filled tilt from start to finish. It is vital for the Buds to grab a victory tomorrow evening, or the vultures will start circling around those who fail to live up to the now high expectations that fans and management have put on this years club.

LEAFS IN WASHINGTON

LEAFS TRAVEL TO WASHINGTON TO TAKE ON CAPS
The Leafs will play their first road game of the season tonight at Washington. If the Leafs are going to contend for a playoff spot they must improve on their poor road record of last season. The Caps are a solid club loaded with star power and will be a tough test for the Buds. The Leafs will bring their rugged style of play into Washington, however if the Leafs are going to win the game they must stay out of the penalty box. Against Montreal the Leafs were deadly when they had the man advantage, as local boy Matt Stajan scored two power play goals. However, the tying goal by the Habs was scored when the solid defenceman Mike Komisarek was in the box. Clutch goaltending will be necessary to keep Alexander Ovechekin off of the score sheet, and Vesa Toskala will have to be sharper than he was in the opener. The Leafs should excite the fans with more than a few scraps and will attempt to physically punish the home side this evening. The quest for the playoffs has begun, and to reach that goal the Buds must show the league that they are indeed road warriors.

LEAFS LOSE IN OT

LEAFS FALL TO HABS IN O.T. THRILLER
The Toronto Maple Leafs lost a heartbreaker in overtime, falling 4-3 to the Canadiens. The new look Leafs played an aggressive game and many Leafs spent time in the penalty box. The penalty killing unit is in dire need of improvement, as this aggressive brand of hockey will mean that the Leafs will be shorthanded often. In order for the team to be successful the penalty killing unit must get better. The game featured a number of big hits and scraps, and as advertised the Leafs are a rough and ready bunch. Mike Komisarek blocked four shots and looked like the best Leaf defenceman last night. Montreal scored two goals when Komisarek was in the penalty box. If the former Hab can stay out of the box it will make life easier for goalie Vesa Toskala who surrendered four goals on 27 shots. A positive factor for the Leafs was Mississauga native Matt Stajan, who scored two power play goals and won 12 faceoffs. The Leafs have the day off today before travelling to Washington to face the Capitals tomorrow night.

OPENING NIGHT

LEAFS SET TO GO TO BATTLE ON OPENING NIGHT
The Maple Leafs are set to begin the 2009-10 NHL season with high expectations. After an offseason that saw the roster change dramatically, the Leafs open tonight against the Montreal Canadiens at the ACC. After a preseason that saw the club score piles of goals, the Leafs expect to carry over that offensive firepower into the regular season. Rookie Viktor Stalberg, who recorded eight goals during the preseason is expected to continue his torrid scoring streak and should challenge for the rookie of the year. The key offseason acquisition, Phil Kessel will not suit up until mid November, so goals will have to come from Stalberg and others until Kessel is ready. If the Leafs will contend this year they will need clutch goaltending from somebody. Vesa Toskala has recovered from off season surgery and will be the opening night starter. New goalie coach Francois Allaire has been working with Toskala who if healthy should be vastly improved from last year. If Toskala does not get the job done than coach Wilson may turn to Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson, another offseason acquisition from Sweden who looked sharp during the preseason. Tonight’s opponent, the Habs, were a playoff team last year and if the Leafs wish to return to the playoffs than they will have to beat playoff calibre teams. One thing is for sure, teams will not enjoy visiting the ACC to take on ‘Burke’s Bay Street Bullies” as the club has increased its toughness through a number of moves. Many hockey experts say that you can tell how a season will go by how a team performs on the very first shift. If this is the case lets hope that our Buds come out flying, hitting, and ready to play tonight and for the remaining games. Nothing short of a playoff spot will please Leaf fans, who have waited far too long for a run at Stanley.

FANS DEMAND A RETURN TO THE PLAYOFFS IN2009-10

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR 2009-10 LEAFS
On the eve of the start of the 2009-10 National Hockey League season, the expectations throughout Leaf nation are higher than ever. Following an offseason where General Manager Brian Burke drastically remade the roster the Leafs are expected to challenge for a playoff spot for the first time in what seems like an eternity. The Leaf roster appears to have improved at all three levels, and these improvements should lead to a playoff spot this year. In goal, Vesa Toskala will remain the starter, and it appears as though the groin injury that ended his season early in 2008-09 has been rectified. One of Burke’s key acquisitions was Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson, who appears to be a salary cap bargain at $900, 000, who will push Toskala and could become the starter sooner rather than later if Toski falters. The defence corps will be rough and rugged with key additions Mike Komisarek, Francois Beauchemin, and Garnett Exelby, who will team up with second year man Luke Schenn, who appears to be a future all-star. Up front, the speedy rookie Viktor Stalberg has shown throughout the preseason that he does indeed belong on the top two lines, and is an early front runner for rookie of the year. Other new forwards like Colton Orr, and Wayne Primeau will provide veteran leadership and more of the toughness that the GM craves. Whatever the case may be, teams that travel to the ACC will have to earn every inch of ice, as the Leafs will be a ready to rumble type of club who should give Leaf fans what they have desired for many years; a trip to the playoffs to contend for Lord Stanley’s mug.

WHO WILL BE BETWEEN THE PIPES FOR THE LEAFS?

WHO WILL BE #1?
The Toronto Maple Leafs roster appears to be drastically improved from last year, however one key question remains; who will be the number one man between the pipes for 2009-10? According to the Leafs brass, incumbent goaltender Vesa Toskala will be the number one at the start of the year, however if he falters there are others waiting for an opportunity. Despite allowing seven goals on Sunday night versus Buffalo, Toskala still has the confidence of GM Brian Burke, who stated in today’s Toronto Star that “I believe in Vesa.” The confidence that Burke has in Toskala is all well and good, however with Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson waiting in the wings Toskala must perform or risk losing his job. If the Leafs are to return to the playoffs this season, a goal that is definitely attainable, clutch goaltending will be essential. Joey MacDonald has shown he can be a quality backup, and given the right opportunity he could even be a starter on some teams. For now it appears as though the starting job will remain Toskalas, however if things go array early do not be surprised if there are regular “Monster” sightings in the Leafs crease throughout the year.

BUSY PRESEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

LEAFS GO 2-1 ON BUSY WEEKEND
The Toronto Maple Leafs came out of their busiest weekend in years with two victories and a loss. The Leafs triumphed 5-4 in Detroit on Friday, followed by a 2-1 victory over the same Wings on Saturday night at the ACC. The Saturday night tilt featured a strong performance by goaltender Jonas “The Monster” Gustavsson, who looks as if he is destined to become the number one goaltender with the club. The Buds closed out the preseason last night, losing a high scoring affair to the Buffalo Sabres 7-6, a game that saw goalie Vesa Toskala surrender seven goals. The Leafs made a few roster decisions; sending slick rookie Nazim Kadri back to the London Knights and keeping high scoring power forward Viktor Stalberg up with the big club. Most prognosticators had Kadri pegged for a return to junior, however that is not to say that Leafs management won’t bring up the kid for an extended look at some point during the regular season. Kadri should be a lock to represent Canada at the World Junior tournament, which in turn will add to the impressive rookie’s development. In the case of Stalberg, it appears as though the big Swede from the University of Vermont will provide much needed scoring for a club that is desperate for offence. The Leafs preseason is now complete, and the real action will commence on Thursday night when the hated Montreal Canadiens travel to the ACC.

BUDS FACE BUSY WEEKEND

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in preparation mode for what appears to be a busy weekend for the club. Tonight the Buds travel to Detroit to begin a home and home series against one of their original six rivals. Tonight’s game will feature the debut of Jonas “the Monster” Gustavsson who will get the chance to show off his skills between the pipes. The Swedish goalkeeper has recovered from minor heart surgery and Leafs Nation is eager to see what the big Swede can do when given an opportunity. The Leafs will host the always powerful Red Wings tomorrow night at the ACC, and finish up the hectic schedule by hosting the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night. This weekend will be vital to many Leafs who are battling for opening day roster spots including goaltender Joey MacDonald and the slick rookie Nazim Kadri. In the case of the rookie Kadri, it initially appeared as if he was a lock to return to junior, however after a multitude of nifty performances he may indeed force coaches and management to keep him up with the big club. In any event, this busy weekend that features three games in three nights will be huge for coaches, management, players, and fans of the Blue and White.

LEAFS DROP ONE IN BUFFALO

The winning streak is over. The Leafs dropped a tough one in Buffalo last night, coming up on the wrong end of a 3-2 score. Despite the loss there were some positive contributions made by some Leafs. Forward Jiri Tlusty broke out of his scoring slump and recorded his first point of the preseason by scoring on a penalty shot midway through the second period. Centre John Mitchell continues to impress during the preseason, scoring the second Leaf goal during the third period. It seems as though Mitchell is a lock to play on one of the top three lines based on his strong showing thus far. The most impressive Leaf on the night was goaltender Joey MacDonald, who made 28 saves, some of which were spectacular. MacDonald is in a dogfight to remain with the big club as he is battling Toskala and the soon to be medically cleared “Monster.” However, MacDonald has shown that he deserves to stay with the team, which in turn will force Coach Ron Wilson into making yet another tough roster decision. The Leafs have a well deserved day off today before travelling to Detroit to face the Red Wings on Friday. The Buds will finish off the home and home with Detroit on Saturday night at the ACC, followed by a visit from the Sabres on Sunday.

LEAFS WIN IN SHOOTOUT

Being down by two goals does not seem to bother the Toronto Maple Leafs. After falling behind 2-0 halfway through the first period, the Leafs showed great team resiliency by coming from behind to tie it up and defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a shootout. Victor Stalberg opened the Maple Leaf account during the second period with Tyler Bozak and Christian Hanson adding assists. The equalizer was provided by the splendid rookie Nazim Kadri, who continues to flash the offensive skill set that made him the 7th overall pick in this year’s draft. Stalberg recorded his second point of the night with an assist on the Kadri goal. Defenceman Francois Beauchemin also added an assist, and has proved to be a welcomed offensive presence from the blueline. Solid goaltending was provided throughout the night by Veska Toskala, who stopped both Pens shots in the shootout. Forwards Lee Stempniak and Kadri scored for the Leafs in the shootout. A win is a win whether it is the pre season or not, and sending the defending cup champs back to Pittsburgh with a loss has boosted the morale of players and fans throughout Buds nation. The Leafs will attempt to continue their winning ways when they take on the Sabres tonight in Buffalo.

LEAFS SET TO TAKE ON CUP CHAMPS AT THE ACC

The matchup is so hot it will surely melt the ice. The defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins travel to the ACC tonight at 7PM in what will certainly be an exciting battle. The Pens are led by Sydney Crosby, perhaps the best player in the league at the moment. Crosby and his mates will put on an entertaining show; however they must be weary of the new and improved version of the Blue and White. The Leafs will attempt to assert themselves physically against Pittsburgh, and as the previous pre season games can attest there should be some glove dropping going on throughout the course of the game. This game will be a great test for Toronto and should help to gage just how competitive the club will be this season. To be the best you have to beat the best, thus a win over “Syd the Kid” and the Pens will not only boost the confidence of Buds nation, but will also show that the Leafs will be a team to be reckoned with in 2009.

PENS COMING TO TOWN

The cup champs are coming to town. The tell it like it is style of the GM is both honest and direct and the 2009 edition of the Blue and White will play with the spirit that Burke has brought to the club. Burke has made a number of acquisitions this off season making the Leafs tougher and more skilled, areas the club has been lacking in over the past few seasons. By pulling a blockbuster deal and acquiring Phil Kessel the Leafs have put themselves into a position to contend for a playoff spot this season.
While serving as the Vice President of the National Hockey League, Burke was responsible for handing out suspensions for those who broke the on ice rules. Somewhat ironically, the team Burke has built in Toronto will be tough and will at some point have a player or two facing a potential suspension. As he did in Hartford, Vancouver and in Anaheim Burke has put together a roster that will fight, check, protect the goalie and make a run at the playoffs. The acquisition of the young and ultra talented Kessel who will make his debut in November makes the Leafs a threat to make the playoffs this year, while contending for the cup in the not to distant future.
Burke who won the cup with Anaheim in 2006-07 has built the Leafs his way, and if history is any indication then the Leafs under the direction of the stoic former lawyer will look to end the 43 year Stanley Cup drought.

LEAFS SNAP UP SCORER KESSEL

Phil Kessel is a goal scorer. The Toronto Maple Leafs pulled the trigger on the must anticipated deal and landed the 21 year old Kessel from the Boston Bruins. The price was indeed steep, first round draft picks in 2010 and 2011, as well as a second rounder in 2010. Although the price seems steep, Kessel scored 36 goals last season and will bring that scoring touch to a club that must upgrade its goal output. The 2009 edition of the Maple Leafs appears as if it will be a hard nosed club, full of young talent to compliment Kessel. Youngsters such as Nazim Kadri, Christian Hanson, Viktor Stalberg, and Tyler Bozak should provide the club with solid talent for many years to come. The addition of Kessel practically guarantees that the Leafs will be a playoff club in 2009. The price for Kessel may have been high, however not many 21 year olds are 30 plus goal scorers and the Leafs have been lacking in the offensive department over the last few years. General Manager Brian Burke has put his own stamp on the Leafs roster and the club appears to be tougher, younger and more skilled. Perhaps this is the year that the Leafs not only return to the playoffs, but make a run for the cup.

THE BEST LEAFS TICKET PRICES IN TOWN!

Plan on attending any Leaf games this year? LEAF BRASS HAS TOUGH DECISION WITH RESPECT TO KADRI'S FUTURE

Nazim Kadri will never forget his first Leaf game in his home town. The London Ontario native thrilled fans and management alike with his inspiring two way play last night at the John Labbatt Centre that saw the youngster net his first goal. Throughout training camp Kadri has not looked out of place to say the least and GM Brian Burke will be forced to make a tough decision regarding the status of his prized first round draft choice. The initial plan seemed to be to send Kadri back to London to further polish his already impressive array of skill and speed while maturing into more of an on ice leader. Kadri’s size (he weighs 180 pounds) was thought to be too small for the big club this year. Another year of strength training and proper nutrition was thought to be the best road for the club to take with the slick young centre. However with the addition of burley forwards Wayne Primeau and Colton Orr, Kadri could find himself with more room to operate than rookies traditionally receive. This combined with rugged blue liners Luke Schenn, Garnet Exelby, Mike Komisarek, and Phil Oreskovic should provide Kadri with more than enough bodyguards for the rookie to fly around and flash his unique skill set. Leaf coach Ron Wilson has stated that if Kadri is not on the top two lines than it would be better for the rookie to remain in junior. This is true, however what’s to say that Kadri is not one of the best two centers in the organization today. Eighteen year olds can be ruined by being brought into the rough and tumble too early, yet others have flourished. Learning on the job by spending the entire season with the big club that can certainly protect him may be the best choice for a club looking to make the playoffs for the first time in what seems like an eternity.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ticketpartners.blogspot.com/2009/09/should-he-stay-or-should-he-go-leaf.html' title='SHOULD HE STAY OR SHOULD HE GO? Following an offseason where many old faces hit the road GM Brian Burke has brought in a number of new players who will bring different elements to the club in 2009. The no nonsense Burke was sick and tired of his team getting pushed around last season which in turn forced him to seek different types of players. One thing is for sure, the 2009 edition of the Toronto Maple Leafs will certainly not lack toughness.
Visiting teams that enter the ACC will have to pay a physical price and will know full well that they have just played a tough hard nosed club. The edition of bruisers Colton Orr and Wayne Primeau to the forward ranks will surely make the Leafs more physical along the glass. The defence corps will gladly welcome Mike Komisarek, Garnet Exelby, and the burly Phil Oreskovich, all of whom will limit traffic in front of whoever wins the goaltending battle following the pre-season.
Speaking of goaltenders, just who will be the man between the pipes on opening day? All signs point to the incumbent, Vesa Toskala, especially considering that the new acquisition Jonas Gustavsson has been recently treated for a minor heart ailment. Look for Toskala to start early until the “Monster” is ready. Joey MacDonald will be a solid back up and will contribute significant minutes if Toskala struggles early.
Following last night’s 4-0 victory over Philadelphia in London Ontario, the Leafs must decide on the fate of promising rookie Nazem Kadri, who scored his first goal in front of his home town fans. Early on it looked as if the young centre would return to junior to both develop his game and add muscle to his 5’10 frame while playing against players his age or younger. However, following his play in the pre season it is obvious that the young man may be one of the top two centre men on the club, thus the choice to return him to London of the OHL or keep the youngster with the big club will surely be on the minds of both Brian Burke and the fans. The bottom line is that all Leaf fans are desperate for a return to the playoffs. With the acquisitions that Burke made in the offseason, that return should indeed come this year.
